The Swiss Federal Bank's safe deposit box  lock is one of the most ingenious and decorative we have seen. Built in 1912 by Fichet, the famous French safe company, it can be reprogrammed to fit any client key.

The left keyhole is for the client, with 5 curved indented brass levers and the corresponding 5 brass dented wheels, each with a small indentation. When the correct key is inserted, the wheels' indentations all line up and the banker key on the right can release the lock and move the bolt. When a new client took over a safe deposit box, the bank could refit the lock to a different client key by changing the position of the little wheels relative to the brass levers, so that even if the old client had made a copy of his key, he could no longer open the box. We do not know if this ingenious device was really used by the bank since a bank officer would always need to be present and check the client's identity before he would release the lock using the bank key.
